Peru and China seek to strengthen cooperation in the agricultural sector

At a recent meeting at Peru's Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri), Minister Angel Manero Campos and the Vice Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the People's Republic of China, Deng Xiaogang, discussed the importance of agricultural cooperation between the two countries. Manero Campos expressed Peru's interest in increasing trade openness and highlighted the need for support from the Chinese Government to carry out irrigation projects to boost agricultural development in Peru.

In turn, Deng Xiaogang emphasized the importance of developing infrastructure for the advancement of the regions and agronomic production. He also suggested a Peruvian work team visit China to learn about its agricultural development projects in the north and south of the country. Then, he highlighted the importance of technical collaboration and the involvement of various government sectors in implementing projects.

Minister Manero thanked the Chinese government for the technical exchange that has allowed Peruvian professionals to learn and exchange experiences in China. "On our side, we are committed to contributing with our biological diversity," he said.

Manero said they were working in the phytosanitary protocols to export fruits, such as fresh pomegranates and pecans, and frozen products, such as mango, avocado, and blueberries, to China. He noted that these protocols were moving forward and could be ready this year. He also said they continued working on the homologation to export beef and pork, and the phytosanitary protocols for bananas, pitahaya, fresh cherries, and blueberries.

Peru and the People's Republic of China have maintained a solid bilateral relationship since they established diplomatic relations in 1971, participating in forums such as the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC).
