Swiss fruit trading company Tobi Seeobst is working on the packaging of the future

"If we don't do anything, we won't make any progress"

True to the motto 'Doing nothing is not an option', sustainability is viewed as a holistic issue at Tobi Seeobst. In addition to photovoltaics and the use of environmentally friendly refrigerants, the Swiss company is committed to avoiding and minimising food waste at every stage of production. "Careful handling of our fruit is a first, but extremely important contribution to greater sustainability," confirms Andrea Fluck, Marketing Manager at Tobi. Ecological packaging material is also an ongoing issue. "We are in constant dialogue with our customers on this topic, and we are also constantly testing new products internally," explains Hansruedi Gallmann, who, as Head of Sales and Marketing, is an essential contact for wholesalers.

Tobi is currently working with start-up companies to develop sustainable packaging for berries and fruit. "Tobi has also already tested jute packaging. Development, decision-making and any test runs take a lot of time. However, we are convinced of our commitment - if we don't do anything, we won't make any progress," says Hansruedi Gallmann. Tobi is taking a different approach by testing different resilient fruit varieties. Gallmann: "If certain varieties are resistant or partially resistant to diseases or pests, fewer pesticides need to be used. This leads to more sustainable fruit crops overall."
