Facility also used for avocados and pawpaws

Joburg market introduces banana ripening facility

The Joburg Market Banana Ripening Facility is focused on improving the quality and market value of fresh produce like bananas, pawpaw, and avocados for farmers. This facility is equipped with 57 rooms capable of handling over 1,500 pallets simultaneously, ensuring a controlled ripening process. Bananas are ripened at temperatures ranging from 12-16°C, pawpaw at 32°C, and avocados at 24°C, with adjustments made based on the fruit's condition for optimal ripeness.

According to a spokesperson from the Joburg Market, "The Joburg Market has set a high standard with the banana ripening facility, making it an essential partner for any farmer who wants to optimise their harvest." Despite challenges like load-shedding, the facility maintains continuous operations through a connection to the Moffat and Weppenaar substations' ring feed and a 7.81MVA generation farm comprising multiple generators. This ensures the ripening process is not disrupted by external power issues.

The facility charges R17.20 per pallet per day, excluding VAT, offering an affordable solution for farmers aiming to enhance the value of their produce. The careful monitoring and temperature control at the facility guarantee that the fruit reaches the sales halls in optimal condition, reducing waste and increasing marketability. Farmers from South Africa and Mozambique are encouraged to utilize this facility, which represents a significant investment in the agricultural sector, providing an efficient and cost-effective service.
