Seizing opportunities in a year with plenty of Peruvian mangoes and avocados

Under the leadership of CEO Alfredo Morales and CCO César Torrejón, the firm Grupo Tavari faces a promising and challenging year in the export of Peruvian mangoes and avocados to the demanding markets of Europe and the United States. With more than a decade of experience in the sector, Tavari has developed key strategies to work in a context of high competition and abundant production.

This year, the mango season has started between two and four weeks earlier, leading to a significantly higher production than in previous seasons. "We have been seeing an abundant flowering, especially in the areas of Tambogrande, Motupe and Casma, which anticipates a high export volume," says Morales. With an estimated 250 containers of fresh mango and 50 containers of frozen mango, the company is getting ready for a major logistical challenge.

To be able to face the competition from other producing countries, such as Brazil and Ecuador, Grupo Tavari has focused 90% of its exports on specific programs with supermarkets in the United States and Europe. This strategy allows it to avoid the risks associated with the spot market, where oversupply can cause prices to plunge, negatively affecting everyone involved, from producers to supermarkets.

Grupo Tavari also plans to give a boost to its frozen mango business in order to make better use of its own production and that of its associated producers.

Grupo Tavari's production cycle is carefully planned to maximize efficiency and minimize supply shocks. The harvest of the mango production, consisting mainly of the Kent variety, starts in week 46, in November, and runs until week 9 or 10 of the following year. This careful timing is crucial to guarantee the product's freshness and to meet the quality standards demanded in the European market, where the fruit must be refrigerated on the very day of the harvest.

As for frozen avocados, Grupo Tavari's production is carried out mostly in the period from March to July. The product is dispatched within six to eight months so as not to overlap with the mango season. "We finish with the avocados in July, and then we start storing for the following season, making sure that all the stock is dispatched before we start with the frozen mangoes," says Torrejón. This approach has allowed them to keep a constant and high quality supply, even in years where the production has been affected by the weather conditions.

Grupo Tavari expects its exports to grow by 10% annually, driven by its expansion into new markets, such as Oceania and Asia, where they plan to enter in the coming years. "We are focused on shipping quality, rather than quantity, in order to protect the reputation of Peruvian mangoes in the international markets," says Morales.

In addition to quality, Grupo Tavari is committed to social and environmental responsibility, meeting the standards of the GlobalG.A.P. and Rainforest Alliance certifications, which are crucial for accessing European and US markets. "We make sure to comply with the requirements of all certifications and are constantly striving to reduce our carbon footprint and improve the water management," says Torrejón.
