Markets quite active on field cucumbers

The domestic, more local production of field cucumbers has largely finished for the season. "The hot weather had caused bloom drop earlier this month and as a result, hurt both the second and third picks of field cucumbers," says Tony Incaviglia of GR Fresh.

In addition to the hot weather, rains were hitting some of the local growing regions. Also, there was rain in the Southeast region which was a byproduct of Hurricane Debby. "With that wet weather mixed in, quality becomes an issue on field cucumbers," says Incaviglia.

Incaviglia says field cucumber markets tend to jump as September comes.

Earlier end to local seasons
That said, the local production is ending at about the usual time. "Historically the market starts to jump as we move into September," says Incaviglia. "Usually it's the first freeze that hits regions such as Michigan and New Jersey, but that heat cut back a lot of their yields and volumes. So it's hitting before the first frost."

Meanwhile, for field cucumbers, many eyes are turning to Mexico for its production.

With the strong demand as production moves over, all of this is leaving the market tight for field cucumbers and Incaviglia says it will approach the high $20s to low $30s in the next few weeks.
