Mainland China to resume import of Taiwan's Wendan pomelo

The General Administration of Customs (GAC) has announced the resumption of Wendan pomelo imports from Taiwan starting Monday. This decision follows the suspension that began on Aug 3, 2022, due to the detection of quarantine pests in these citrus fruits. The GAC has conducted a comprehensive assessment of the corrective actions undertaken by Taiwanese fruit producers, leading to the lifting of the import ban.

For re-entry into the mainland market, Wendan pomelos must originate from orchards and packaging facilities that are officially registered, with a list of these entities available on the GAC's official website.

Chen Binhua, representing the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, highlighted that the initial suspension was a measure to protect biological security and consumer health on the mainland. The desire to restart Wendan pomelo imports has been particularly strong among certain individuals and officials in Taiwan, including Fu Kun-chi of the Chinese Kuomintang and representatives from Hualien county. Efforts have been made by these groups to upgrade quality controls and ensure the safety of the pomelos designated for mainland consumption. Chen noted that the decision to resume imports was also influenced by the improvements documented by Hualien county businesses.

Expressing a spirit of familial unity, the mainland has expressed openness to dialogue with Taiwanese counterparts on the importation of agricultural products, aiming to support the welfare of Taiwan's grassroots communities.
