From January to July 2024, Georgia experienced a 50% increase in tomato imports. According to data from the National Statistics Office of Georgia, the country imported tomatoes worth over $12.1 million during this period, compared to over $8.06 million in the same months last year.
The average cost of importing tomatoes has also risen 43%. Last year, the cost was approximately 42 cents per kilogram, whereas this year it has increased to 60 cents per kilogram.
It is important to note that over 99% of Georgia's tomato imports this year came from Turkey. Georgia brought in 19,953 tons of Turkish tomatoes, worth $12.06 million.
In addition to Turkey, tomatoes were also imported from a few other countries, though in much smaller quantities:
- - Azerbaijan: 57 tons worth $47,600
- - Iran: 19 tons valued at $6,900
- - France: $200 for 20 kg
- - Netherlands: $40 for 20 kg.
