Kenya's avocado exports hit 16,000 metric tons by August 2024

In the first eight months of 2024, Kenya recorded a rise in avocado exports, reaching 16,000 metric tons, an increase from the 14,000 metric tons reported in 2023, as per data from a trade association.

Hosea Machuki, CEO of the Fresh Produce Exporters Association of Kenya, attributed this growth to expanded cultivation areas by farmers aiming to engage more in the horticultural sector. "We expect to export 17,000 metric tons by the end of the year," Machuki stated during a workshop in Nairobi. The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development notes that Kenyan growers primarily focus on Fuerte, Hass, Pinkerton, and Jumbo varieties of avocado. Machuki highlighted the European Union and the United Arab Emirates as principal export markets, with China noted as an emerging destination for Kenyan avocados.
