Following the devastation caused by typhoon Yagi in northern Vietnam, vegetable prices in Hanoi, Hai Phong, and Quang Ninh have seen an increase. The storm, which has been the most powerful to hit Asia this year, resulted in crop damage and transportation disruptions, leading to a price surge of up to 30% in some areas. Markets in these regions reported fewer vendors and shoppers, with a notable price jump observed in Hanoi's Nghia Tan Market. Quang Ninh Province, adjacent to the China border, experienced a 5-10% rise in vegetable and fruit prices, as reported by its Department of Industry and Trade.
Transportation issues have been a significant concern for traders, who anticipate that prices may remain elevated for some time due to the impact on farms. Despite these challenges, supermarkets such as Co.opmart Hanoi have maintained stable prices, attributing this to ample stock levels. Nguyen Thi Kim Dung, Director of Co.opmart Hanoi, confirmed that their inventory is sufficient to meet customer demand despite some suppliers failing to deliver. All WinMart retail outlets, with the exception of those damaged by the storm, operated as usual, and Aeon Vietnam also saw a return of consumers post-typhoon, primarily for essential goods purchases.
The aftermath of typhoon Yagi, which claimed 24 lives since making landfall in Vietnam, has transitioned into a tropical depression, continuing to cause heavy rainfall and flooding in the region.
