Peruvian superfoods growers and exporter set sights on Asian expansion

The Peruvian fine fruits and vegetables grower, packer/industrial processor and exporter Danper, with Rosario Bazán founder and CEO, aims to grow further in the Asian market. "We certainly keep on strengthening our position in our current markets and we see in Asia a huge potential to keep growing."

Rosario Bazán and with her family who run the business.

Bazán co-founded Danper with her husband Jorge Aranguri Carranza in 1994. She says a focus on sustainability for all role players of the business helped them to reach the milestone 30 years. "Recently I had the honour of representing Danper to each of its stakeholders, in my role as CEO and co-founder, at the anniversary ceremony of its first 30 years of life, held at our Muchik Estate. It is a company that, through its business model based on the creation of shared value, has been able to generate sustained inclusive growth throughout its first 30 years, focusing on achieving profitability while generating progress for its workers and different stakeholders."

Along these 30 years Danper has developed from an industrial canner of asparagus, with revenue of $3.3 million, into a strategically diversified portfolio of fine fruits and vegetables packed in three categories, fresh produce, frozen and preserved: cans, jars and convenience packs for ready meals. Together with two sister companies, Dominus and ArbaCol, which are both growers packers and exporters, the first one based in Peru focused in fresh and frozen mangoes and other fruits and the second one based in Colombia is focused in fresh avocado. In addition, the Group has two import and distribution companies, EuroAndes in Europe and ASF in the US. The estimated Group revenue for 2024 is $345 million.

"Our main markets are Europe and the US, while Asia is still at a lower scale but at a faster growth rate. Although every single product/ category has its own rhythm and as we are focused on superfoods, we see a growing demand for all the categories, especially for fresh produce and frozen," states Bazán.

Coping with the weather and climate challenges over the past two seasons is something she says the Danper leadership have done well. "There are factors that you cannot control, like the climate challenges. We could cope with the past two seasons thanks to our proactive management and technical team at the fields together with a strong R&D. We could create the right environment to a fast and a solid learning from the changing patterns that we experienced. Our talented teams with an innovation mindset within the Shared Value framework is a key combination for us," explains Bazán.

"Our constant challenge has been to adjust our strategies and its execution to the continuous changes in the business environment keeping the alignment between what the markets need and how can we can satisfy them keeping us as their preferred reliable source," states Bazán.

Sustainability at Danper born out of their sense of purpose
"We celebrate 30 years of history, of continuous learning, dedication and commitment, of achievements, and, above all, of sustainable development. It has been three decades of permanent innovation, of overcoming challenges, of learning from our mistakes and of building a dream that has transcended borders and has had a positive impact on the lives of thousands of people, especially the most vulnerable population in our country," Bazán proudly states.

Looking to the future, Bazán's children will take over the challenges that will continue to come, as well as the opportunities. "I am convinced that our legacy will continue to take Danper to new heights through the leadership of our second generation, Jorge Aranguri Bazán and Maria Alejandra Aranguri Bazán. They will together with outstanding young leaders ensure that we will continue to grow with the same sense of purpose, commitment, integrity and passion that has brought us here," she concludes.
