Growing hydroponic specialty peppers in Mexico

HyFood grows hydroponic specialty peppers in Mexico. Valeria Guadiana Rodriguez with HyFood states that they do have competitors in the hot pepper market, but there is still a significant gap to fill, especially in the area of sustainably grown, high-quality hydroponic products. "While others may offer similar varieties, our focus on innovation, year-round production, and superior quality sets us apart as the only company in Mexico."

The HyFood peppers are marketed under their own brand, which is important as it reflects their commitment to innovation, sustainability, and excellence in the food industry. "It helps us stand out and build trust with our customers by showcasing our unique approach to hydroponic cultivation and eco-friendly practices. It also strengthens our market presence, enabling us to drive growth and make a meaningful impact. In essence, our brand is important for us to communicate our values, connect with our audience, and achieve long-term success," says Valeria.

Increasing demand
HyFood supplies major retailers across Mexico and the United States, including HEB and Walmart. "In Mexico, we initially supplied our popular Habanero peppers only, but due to increasing demand, we have recently expanded our product line to include other pepper varieties. In the U.S., our complete range of peppers is available in retail stores," Valeria says as she describes their market presence."

When asked about the role of climate in their production, Valeria says: "Climate change has a significant impact, but using hydroponic systems helps us mitigate many of these challenges. For example, the high temperatures of the last two years have been part of our decision to invest in foggers for next year. Controlling the growing environment allows us to maintain optimal conditions for our peppers regardless of external weather patterns. This approach not only ensures consistent quality and yield but also allows us to adapt more quickly to changing conditions, making our operations more resilient in the face of climate change.

Hot hot hot
HyFood produces a variety of peppers, including the Carolina Reaper, Trinidad Scorpion, Ghost Pepper, Orange, Red, Yellow and Dark Habanero, Scotch Bonnet, Hot Thai, UFO Pepper, Red Fresno, Shishito Pepper, and Banana Pepper varieties. According to Valeria, the Ghost Pepper, Trinidad Scorpion, Carolina Reaper, and Habanero varieties are on the rise in current trends. "The growing interest in intense, bold flavors has made these hot peppers increasingly popular, especially in products like spicy snacks, sauces, and even candies. Consumers are seeking out these peppers for their extreme heat and unique flavor profiles, driving a surge in demand across various culinary applications. As people continue to embrace more adventurous and fiery tastes, these peppers are becoming key players in the spicy food trend."

She concluded her thoughts on current trends with an option for a milder appetite. "Shishito Pepper is also gaining popularity, particularly for its mild heat and versatility as a perfect appetizer when blistered. These varieties are becoming go-to choices for both home cooks and professional chefs who are looking to add unique and flavorful ingredients to their dishes."

Looking ahead, HyFood's key challenges involve maintaining innovation as they expand, according to Valeria, and "ensuring we adapt to new market trends, and continuously improving our processes.
