Small but mighty: A visit to the wholesale market hall in Mainz

With several million inhabitants and the city triangle of Frankfurt, Wiesbaden and Mainz, the Rhine-Main region is one of the most important conurbations in Germany. To ensure the provision of services, the fresh produce centre, which was originally based in the east of Frankfurt, moved to a modern location on the northern outskirts of the city 20 years ago. For the further distribution of fresh produce outside the city of Frankfurt, however, the retailers based there are still largely dependent on their colleagues in the respective regions. The Mainz wholesale market hall has also been an important handling and distribution centre for many years.

Takeover of Rogge GmbH
Today, three fruit wholesalers are located under one roof in the market hall in the southern district of Hechtsheim, namely Rogge GmbH, Weco-Frucht GmbH and Aktürk Obst und Gemüse. The main customers of the resident companies are primarily catering businesses in the Mainz area, as well as specialist shops and weekly markets. The businesses will continue to operate as independent companies, although Rogge GmbH has belonged to Josef Stapf GmbH, which is based in Frankfurt's Frischezentrum, for a few months now. "As a result of the takeover, a significant part of our product range is now purchased centrally, which is why we have also gained some new suppliers with whom we previously had no contact. Our clientele, which primarily includes regional catering businesses, farm shops and weekly markets in the Mainz area, will benefit from the increased variety of products that we can now offer in addition to our already wide range," says Stephan Neidig, buyer and seller at Rogge GmbH, describing the advantages of the new business structure.

Freshcut production on site
In the course of the takeover, Rogge GmbH is also aiming to supply regional food retail markets in the future, whereas it has mainly served pick-up customers to date. By contrast, the neighbours of Weco-Frucht, which was founded in 1983, have been mainly dedicated to delivering fresh fruit and vegetables using their modern fleet of vehicles for many years. The origins of the company date back to the early 1980s, explains Managing Director Hans-Jürgen Neher. "Nowadays, we not only supply our customers with fresh produce, but also with cut produce, whether sticks, cubes or similar, which we mainly cut and prefabricate in our own canteen kitchen. Depending on customer requirements, these products are either processed by hand or machine."

The property, which has an area of around 11,000m2 (including 2,400m2 of hall space), has been leasehold property of the management of WECO Frucht GmbH since 2011. The building has been equipped with a modern photovoltaic system for eight years now.
