Expansion of Exclusive Partner Programme by Port International in Peru

Port International, a provider of premium fruits and vegetables, is pleased to announce the expansion of its Exclusive Partner Programme in Peru. The selected Peruvian producers specialize in the cultivation of organic and Fairtrade bananas of the highest quality for the European market.

For more than two decades, Port International has been importing bananas from Peru, valuing the country's high-quality standards. The bananas from Peru are known for their careful production, which results in minimal imperfections. The proximity of the cultivation areas to the port of Paita – all bananas reach the port within a maximum of 1.5 hours – further contributes to the quality of the products.

Peruvian banana production is distinguished by the involvement of a large number of small-scale producers. Over 750 hectares are cultivated by more than 700 smallholders, each managing an average of just 1 hectare of land. These producers oversee the entire production process with a high level of dedication and expertise. The sustainability of this farming method is underscored by its 100% organic certification and predominantly Fairtrade certification.

Optimal conditions in the Chira Valley

The Chira Valley and particularly the Sullana region offer ideal soil and climate conditions for the cultivation of organic bananas. The dry, mild, and warm climate allows for ecological production that harmonizes with nature. Clean water from the Andes and the nearby Poechos Reservoir ensure year-round water supply, contributing to sustainable agriculture.

On-site quality assurance

To meet the standards of its customers, Port International has established its own quality team in Peru. The seven team members oversee the entire production process, evaluate farms, and optimize the packing process. The team's efforts also facilitate the implementation of special packaging solutions in the South American country.

Sustainability

The Peruvian producers have over 20 years of experience in organic banana cultivation, one of the most sustainable farming methods. In collaboration with cooperatives, Port International implements various sustainability projects, such as the recycling of wash water for the irrigation of neem trees. Moreover, the cooperatives independently decide how to use the Fairtrade premiums to effect positive change locally.

The Exclusive Partner Programme

The expansion of the Exclusive Partner Programme in Peru signifies a continuation of the collaboration between Port International and Peruvian producers. This partnership grants producers planning security and allows Port International to offer a unique product available exclusively through its channels. The sustained support from Port International has played a role in advancing agricultural conditions in the region.
