In August, Brazilian onion exports witnessed a marked increase, with Comex Stat data indicating the shipment of nearly 14,000 tonnes. This volume represents the second highest monthly figure since records began in 1997, showcasing a 154% growth over July 2024. Revenue-wise, these exports generated $8.7 million, the highest monthly value on record for Comex Stat, and a 174% rise from July.
The bulk of these exports targeted neighboring countries, with Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay being the primary recipients. Argentina emerged as the top destination, receiving 55% of the total export volume. Earlier in the year, Argentina had compensated for a shortfall in Brazilian production due to reduced output in the South, leading to a supply gap. The recent surge in exports to Argentina stems from a delayed harvest in northern Argentina, a region that typically fulfills this demand window.
However, the volume of shipments began to decrease last week, with expectations for further declines as the Argentine harvest gains momentum.
