Latvia's agriculture minister Armands Krauze has announced that the VAT rate on fresh local fruits and vegetables will remain at 12%. In a recent interview with Latvian television, Krauze confirmed that he supports keeping the reduced rate and will continue to push for its continuation.
Krauze also mentioned the need to consider applying the reduced VAT rate to a wider range of food products in the future.
Earlier, the Farmers' Union of Latvia had suggested lowering the VAT rate on Latvian fresh fruits, berries, and vegetables to 5%. They believe this could reduce the shadow economy, support farmers, and make local produce more affordable for consumers.
