Peru to export citrus fruits to New Zealand

The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) of Peru and the Ministry of Primary Industries of New Zealand (MPI) have finalized a phytosanitary protocol, facilitating the exportation of Peruvian citrus fruits, including mandarins, oranges, tangelos, and limes, to New Zealand. This agreement was reached during a bilateral technical meeting in Wellington, where the Senasa delegation, led by Vilma Gutarra, and representatives of the Embassy of Peru in New Zealand, signed the Work Plan to initiate exports.

Vilma Gutarra highlighted the importance of diversifying market access for Peruvian products and the role of Midagri - Senasa in achieving this through phytosanitary surveillance and pest control. This development enables producers from regions such as Ica, Lima, Piura, La Libertad, Junín, Arequipa, Ancash, and Lambayeque to access the New Zealand market, adding to Peru's list of export destinations.

Angel Manero of Midagri emphasized the government's commitment to promoting sector growth and expanding the agricultural frontier. Additionally, ongoing efforts include finalizing the Pest Risk Analysis (PRA) for blueberries and drafting a sanitary standard for exporting this crop to New Zealand.

Peru, with phytosanitary export requirements established for 66 countries, is a leading exporter of blueberries, grapes, and quinoa, and ranks high in avocado, asparagus, and mango exports. The country's agricultural sector benefits from Senasa's sanitary and phytosanitary measures, contributing to its growing presence in global markets.
