Non-destructive technology determines fruit ripeness

Technology does not have to be expensive and complicated: sometimes easy-to-use tools can help in everyday work. This is the case of the pulp hardness tester developed by TR Turoni of Forlì, which can determine the ripeness of blueberries, cherries, strawberries and tomatoes.

Cherries, strawberries and blueberries are particularly delicate, so precise yet non-destructive technology is needed.

"Objectively measuring the hardness of the pulp is basic to understanding the right time to harvest," says Enrico Turoni, "since fruits have to reach the end market at the right degree of ripeness. The hardness of the pulp is an important quality index, as most consumers appreciate crunchiness."

TR Turoni offers a series of digital hardness testers that allow the hardness of cherry and blueberry pulp to be measured quickly and easily. The tool simulates the pressure of a finger on the pulp without breaking or penetrating it, and provides the corresponding value.

"This tool makes it possible to assess the degree of pulp hardness of certain types of fruit quickly, accurately and in a non-invasive manner: it is a very important index to monitor, since it has direct repercussions on the shelf-life of the produce, meaning it is a priority aspect to control from harvesting to the point of sale."

The main characteristic of this type of tool is that it does not destroy the fruit being measured, unlike a penetrometer, which is destructive.
