Plants of a new highly-pigmented tarocco citrus variety now on the market

"After several years of waiting and field trials following the discovery of the bud mutation, as well as the years necessary to restore the clone, the new Tarocco Vigo has finally entered the commercial phase. Obviously we are talking about the commercialization of the plants, which can be booked now in authorized nurseries, with deliveries starting in autumn 2025," reports the breeder of the variety himself, Sicilian agronomist Corrado Vigo.

Plants in nurseries

"The clone has been patented at the CPVO (Community Plant Varity Office) and, therefore, it is protected on an EU level. The special characteristics of this Tarocco variety are a great earliness in pigmentation, which occurs as early as late November. Colour exaltation starting as early as mid/late December is just as important: fruits turn deep red and then become purplish in January, without any organoleptic decay. It is precisely when the variety takes on this colour, that the orange flavour somewhat mixes with that of blackberry and raspberry. Another special feature is that the fruit remains on the plants until the end of March, weather permitting, of course."

Corrado Vigo, breeder of the highly-pigmented Tarocco clone of the same name

"There are currently only two nurseries authorized to multiply and sell the plants, and they are both located in the province of Catania. More specifically, they are Vivaio Messina and Vivaio Crisafulli, which I would like to thank for the work they have done for the pre-multiplication and multiplication of the plant material and the creation of the incremental sections. It is now possible to contact these two nurseries to book the plants to be grafted next spring."

"Since it is a patented clone, it obviously follows all the procedures of the patent, and controls have already been planned to prevent counterfeiting," concludes Vigo.
