Earlier this week, Saint Lucia experienced heavy rainfall, leading to flooding in various communities. The event had a minimal effect on infrastructure but significantly impacted the agricultural sector, particularly affecting banana and vegetable producers. These farmers faced losses as the floodwaters washed away fertilizers and submerged fields.
According to Dennery North MP, Shawn Edward, "The vegetable farmers were completely flooded in some areas, so they too suffered a degree of loss. Those who applied fertilizer just before the rains saw everything washed away." This situation has forced farmers to source new fertilizers to salvage their crops.
The flooding also disrupted daily activities, making roads impassable and affecting the ability of residents to go about their daily routines. Specifically, in regions like Dennery, Grande Riviere, Gros Islet, and Bexon, the community faced challenges with transportation and education, as students were unable to attend school and some workers could not reach their places of employment.
"On the morning of the rains, the roads were impassable, and children couldn't leave home to go to school. Some people couldn't make it to work either, which caused a major setback," mentioned Edward, who is also the Minister for Education.
