Oregon designates the potato as its state vegetable

In Salem, Oregon, on September 23, state officials convened to officially recognize the potato as Oregon's state vegetable, highlighting the state's prominent position in the agricultural sector. Despite Idaho's renowned association with potato farming, Oregon stands as the fourth-largest potato producer in the United States, with an annual harvest covering approximately 45,000 acres and contributing $200 million to the state's economy.

The legislative body passed Senate Concurrent Resolution 3 in 2023, endorsing the potato's official status, with Sen. Bill Hansell playing a key role in the bill's sponsorship. Hansell remarked, "The hardworking farmers who cultivate this crop are the backbone of our agricultural sector, and today we acknowledge their contributions by elevating the potato to its rightful status. It was an honor to sponsor SCR 3 and see this resolution come to life. This is a day of celebration not just for potato growers, but for all Oregonians."

As the leading vegetable in sales within the state and the seventh most valuable agricultural commodity, the potato's significance extends beyond domestic borders, with notable exports to countries including Japan, Taiwan, Korea, the Philippines, Mexico, and South America. The year 2023 saw Oregon farmers producing an excess of 600 million potatoes, equivalent to 165,000 tons, surpassing market demand.
