The modern supply chain can sometimes be unpredictable, with unexpected delays and breaks in the cold chain that other shipping and packaging solutions don't account for. That's why Hazel Breatheway's Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) products are specifically engineered to regulate produce respiration rates and maintain beneficial atmosphere levels to protect their content's quality.
"Breatheway offers MAP solutions like pallet bags, case liners, and individual resealable pouch bags along with multiple other size packagings that can be tailored to fit most supply chains, delivering noticeable results for the shipper, retailer, and consumer. What makes this more effective than other MAP technologies is our proprietary, embedded membrane," says Teresa Scattini, vice president of MAP Technology at Hazel Technologies.
The membrane, calibrated specifically for each crop, regulates O² and CO² levels to keep the atmosphere within the packaging at the optimal range — even through temperature fluctuations, cold-chain breaks, storage, and retail. Breatheway's Temperature Switch Technology® actively "exhales" excess CO² and "inhales" the optimum amount of O² to match the produce's natural respiration rate, preventing mold, decay, loss of firmness, and damage that might otherwise be seen during the supply chain.
Breatheway's Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) products are specifically engineered to regulate produce respiration rates and maintain beneficial atmosphere levels to protect their content's quality.
"We've been using this technology in the berry and banana categories for years, but in 2023 began applying it to crops like mini cucumbers, melons, and mangos and have seen amazing results," said Scattini. "The most noticeable difference in all the trials our team has conducted is the better product quality and added shelf-life in comparison to the existing packaging used. Crops transported and stored in Breatheway packaging allow customers more time to move and sell fresh produce and provide better quality to their customers."
For grower-packers, the variety of packaging solutions — from pallet bags to case liners, to individual retail pouch bags — are tailored to fit unique operations, and the team of experts helps to guide Hazel's customers.
"The Breatheway team tests new crops and products, and out in the field, are teaching customers' logistics teams how to seamlessly incorporate Breatheway into their supply chain and provide guidance on post-harvest best practices," Scattini added.
Hazel's Breatheway MAP products are currently on the market and in use around the world — like Europe, North America, Latin and South America, the Middle East, and Asia — applied to berries, cucumbers, melons, bananas, pomegranates, mangos, and more. The Hazel Breatheway team will be exhibiting at the IFPA Global Produce & Florals show and can be found at booth B2225.
