In Jodhpur, a notable increase in vegetable prices has impacted the affordability for many, with garlic, onions, and potatoes seeing marked price hikes. The escalation in garlic prices, in particular, has caused concern among consumers. The cost of garlic has reached Rs 400 per kilo, while onions and potatoes are priced at Rs 50 and Rs 40 per kilo, respectively. The rise in prices has led to a shift in kitchen practices, with households and food establishments opting for alternative vegetables due to the reduced use of onions and garlic. This change is attributed to decreased garlic production following crop damage in key producing regions, as reported by traders Sohanlal and Shravan Mali from Bilada Mandi.
The scarcity of garlic in the market is a result of diminished supply, primarily due to adverse weather conditions affecting crops in states like Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan. The affected regions include Pratapgarh, Mandsaur, Neemuch, Ratlam, Jawara, Chhoti Sadri, Badi Sadri, and Nibaheda, where prolonged rainfall has compromised the onion and garlic yield. The disruption in supply from Maharashtra further exacerbates the situation. Anticipation grows for a potential normalization of prices before the Diwali festival, as per Devaram Mali Khariya Mithapur, a wholesale trader.
