As we start to transition into the Spanish season, Vitafresh Produce are looking forward to receiving the first California Wonder bell peppers from one of their growers in Spain.
"The timing of the first arrivals is pretty normal, we are just about to start with the Spanish supply of California Wonder bell pepper which will run through to the end of March. The Dutch and English supply is just ending and volumes are getting tight," said Harvey Cleeton from Vitafresh Produce. "Spain should start with good quality which will demand better prices."
According to Harvey the Dutch peppers are cheaper at the moment as they clear the last of them from the greenhouses.
"We expect the prices for the Spanish crop to level out as volumes increase, but as always this depends on the weather and the production. Our growers Godoy, in El Ejido, southern Spain are predicting a good season. They have been growing salads for 40 years and have over 300 hectares of production. It is well known as a quality brand and ensures consistency and continuity of supply, which makes our life easier!"
Vitafresh Produce will be importing mainly red and green peppers and some yellow ones, also red and green chillis. The company supplies wholesale and foodservice customers.
"Demand has been fairly consistent for us; it helps to have a brand which is associated with quality. We will bring in a few trucks each week."
Harvey said that checks at the border last season went well. "It was fairly seamless, which was good as we are dealing with fresh produce with a short shelf life and we all want minimum delays. If the additional checks are introduced we will just have to be prepared, its part of the job to keep up to date with changes like this."
