Sinaloa's coconut production continues to plummet

As Mexico's copra and coconut exports grow, Sinaloa's production continues to experience a decreasing trend. According to the country's State Statistical and Geographical Information Center (CIEGSIN), production in the state reached 50,000 tons in 2013 but has decreased significantly, registering only 14,015 tons in 2023. This drop was also reflected in the value of production, which fell by 38% in 2023, to 67.8 million pesos.

Sinaloa now ranks seventh among Mexico's coconut-producing states, with Guerrero ranking first. In 2023 Mexico produced 439 thousand tons of coconuts, i.e. 6.5% less than in the previous year. Despite this decrease, the value of national production reached 2,857 million pesos, and the average price per ton increased by 2.2%.

Coconut stands out for its versatility. It is used in the food industry and the production of textiles and cosmetics. Mexico is the world's ninth-largest coconut producer and its copra exports have increased reaching record figures in the last decade. In 2023, exports exceeded the period average by 42.9% in volume and 51.6% in value. The main export destinations include the United States, the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Canada, Cuba, Malaysia, and Spain.

In contrast, Mexico's coconut imports decreased in volume and value, with the bulk coming from Vietnam and the Philippines, and other countries such as India, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
