Brokaw Nurseries to present its new corporate identity at Fruit Attraction

"In the near future we will offer avocado rootstocks adapted to new soil and edaphoclimatic conditions"

With more than 40 years' experience in the sector and a production capacity that makes them the largest nursery in Spain specializing in subtropical seedlings, Viveros Brokaw stands out in the production of trees with clonal rootstocks, which are increasingly in demand by growers.

"Trees with clonal rootstocks offer multiple advantages," says José María Fernández, CEO of the Malaga-based company. "They make it possible to obtain very homogenous orchards, which facilitates their management and translates into greater productivity and yields, as well as lower management and operation costs. The trees grow earlier and are more productive, which allows a quicker return of the investment in the orchard than with non-clonal trees. These also have tolerance to diseases such as, for example, Phytophthora cinnamomi."

"The choice of rootstock is always made according to the soil and water conditions at the planting site. For our part, we put our technical team, a leader in the sector, at the client's service to carry out a totally customized study and advise the growers on their best options based on the conditions of their farms."

"We must not forget that picking good planting materials is one of the most important strategic decisions to ensure the success of a plantation and our customers tell us so. That is why we are convinced that choosing a Brokaw plant is a guarantee of success."

"The current and future climatic conditions will allow the expansion of avocado cultivation in the north of Spain"
In recent years, Spain has seen great dynamism in the setting up of new avocado plantations in areas such as the Valencian Community, where, according to official data, the number of avocado plantations has increased from 215 hectares in 2013 to almost 3,700 hectares in
2023; and all projections point to a notable expansion on the Cantabrian coast, as well.

"Indeed, there is great potential in the north, as well as in other areas in the country, as the current and future climatic conditions will allow the expansion of avocados and other subtropical crops. Thanks to the mild temperatures recorded all year round and the availability of quality water resources, avocado cultivation can be very successful in these areas."

"Brokaw has specific rootstocks and varieties for this type of climatic conditions that guarantee results to the growers opting for this type of crops."

"It is important to mention that the climatic conditions of the Cantabrian coast are very similar to those of a specific area of Mexico where avocados are a native species, and soon the fruit from the first plantations in the area will be harvested, so we will be able to see first-hand how they perform and what yields are achieved."

"After avocados and mangoes, the two most popular subtropical crops are still cherimoyas and lychees"
The dynamism in the sale of avocado seedlings has not only been observed at a domestic level. "Our markets of influence, and where our commercial strategy is focused, are mainly those of the Mediterranean basin. We are currently exporting seedlings to countries such as Lebanon, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Portugal, etc., and soon we are planning to enter new countries," says José María.

"In the last year, we have also seen an increase in the demand for mango seedlings, especially from producers in areas where water resources are scarce or the quality of the water does not meet the characteristics required for avocado cultivation."

"There is also growing interest in passion fruit cultivation, mainly for its supply to the processing industry. However, after avocados and mangoes, the two most popular subtropical crops among producers are still cherimoyas and lychees."

New corporate identity
Viveros Brokaw will be attending Fruit Attraction with its range of subtropical seedlings this year, in which the event's flagship product is going to be avocados, and it will do so with its new corporate identity, which it will be presenting at the fair. "This new image and corporate identity is the result of many months of work. With it, we aim to convey the values and personality of the Brokaw brand, which the company wants to preserve," says the company's CEO. "We want to make it clear that while our products and services are taking hectares, they are managed down to the millimeter."

"Since joining the firm as CEO in April this year, we have been working intensively with my team to continue strengthening the company's key pillars, so that we can continue to be the industry leader for at least another 40 years. To this end, new projects have been set up, both at an organizational level and to bring improvements at a production level, and we have also stricken new alliances and strengthened our partnerships with private companies and public bodies, which will allow us to provide growers with new avocado rootstocks adapted to new soil and climatic conditions in the near future."

"We have the responsibility of strengthening the leadership of a company that for so many years has already been a leader in the sector, and our focus has been and will continue to be the production of high quality seedlings. To achieve this, our strategy has been based on continuous improvement and innovation, providing added value to the customers who trust in the quality of our plants. We invite any interested parties to visit our stands at Iberflora and Fruit Attraction and discover our new products first-hand."
