In the wake of severe floods and landslides in Nepal, the capital has experienced a sharp increase in vegetable prices. The Kalimati Fruits and Vegetable Market Development Board reports that the wholesale price of small tomatoes escalated dramatically within days, reflecting the broader market volatility. Similarly, brinjals and bottle gourds witnessed significant hikes in their average wholesale prices. These fluctuations are attributed to the extensive damage to highways and bridges, crucial for transporting vegetables to Kathmandu, which saw its supply plummet drastically.
Although there was a brief recovery in the supply volume, officials caution that prices may continue to rise due to potential future road obstructions from anticipated rainfall. The disruption in vegetable transportation is compounded by the damage to vegetable farms caused by the floods, further straining the market. The country also faces a grim toll from the natural disasters, with numerous casualties and injuries reported.
