The Emilia Romagna pear campaign is now in full swing with the Abate variety which, though still far from the splendor of past years, has recorded more than adequate quantities. After some difficult years marked by a production affected by natural calamities, the Opera consortium is now presenting itself to the market with more consistent volumes and a strategy to relaunch the brand and promote the work of its members.
Adriano Aldrovandi, president of Opera La Pera, says that "the start was a difficult one as, during the summer, there was still a large availability of imported produce on the market, both unsold pears from the off-season and Conference from Belgium and the Netherlands, so the new production initially struggled to find space. Moreover, the summer temperatures that lasted until the beginning of September did not encourage consumption. Now that the fall season is here and the Abate variety started being distributed, we are confident of a positive response on the consumption front, which we will also support through communication and marketing initiatives. We want to relaunch our brand, emphasize the availability of quality Italian pears, and communicate with our stakeholders also through Opera La Pera's new LinkedIn page."
"Although not abundant, the pear harvest allows us to return to being the point of reference for all our main customers until the end of the commercial season," Aldrovandi points out. "The quantities available are more than double those of last year, although still far from the full production potential of our members. For 2024/25, we will have pears of optimal size, with high organoleptic qualities and a shelf life suitable for the entire marketing season. The Abate Fetel pear, which is the most distinctive on the market - though with lower yields than expected - will allow us to develop a schedule with our partners until April, which has been impossible in recent years. The size and organoleptic parameters we have found allow us to be optimistic about the quality of the fruit we will supply to our customers."

Opera La Pera will attend Fruit Attraction (Madrid Trade Fair, October 8-10) with its own stand (Hall 8 - 8C14, area CSO Italy). "It is a strategic fair for us, since it takes place at the beginning of the commercial season for pears and sees an increasingly relevant presence of our reference customers, both Italian and foreign. This event allows us to present our offer at an optimal time and to better promote the value of Italian pears."

The estimates released during the last edition of Prognosfruit see the main European production areas in sharp decline compared to last year: -26% for Belgium, -9% for the Netherlands, -15% for Spain.
"All the leading pear producers are experiencing a sharp drop in production, unlike Italy (+120%). This bodes well for a more favorable second half of the season. Although the Italian market is the main one, exports are of fundamental important for us: our main destination market is Germany, followed by France. The trade dynamics and consumption habits of the different countries are constantly evolving, as is the competition of products from other production areas, and this requires us to constantly monitor and be very flexible in our planning."
