Colombian banana exports have experienced remarkable growth

Colombia exported more than 63.7 million boxes of bananas between January and July of this year, i.e. 10 million boxes more than in the same period of last year, according to data provided by the Association of Colombian Banana Producers - Augura. The export value also increased totaling $591.5 million, 15.8% more than in 2023.

This rebound is significant for the Colombian banana sector, representing an important recovery after the years it was affected by the pandemic, and highlighting the positive impact in terms of social benefit for the producing regions, especially Urabá and Magdalena. The association will participate in this year's Fruit Attraction fair in Madrid, Spain, to consolidate this year as the best since the pandemic and explore new export opportunities. This is the fruit sector's most relevant international event, bringing together more than 2,000 exhibitors from 56 countries.

Emerson Aguirre, president of Augura, highlighted the importance of the banana sector in Colombia's economy and its impact on the lives of 50,000 direct workers in the farms, especially in the Urabá region of Antioquia. Aguirre highlighted how the banana industry has contributed to peace and social development in the region, with reincorporated people from peace processes taking on union and political leadership roles.

In addition, during Fruit Attraction, Colombia will seek to raise awareness about the importance of establishing fair prices for Colombian bananas, which are recognized for their high quality and have labels that accredit them as an environmentally and socially sustainable product, among international buyers.
