Lior Carmeli, Breedx CEO:

“Demand for new varieties of seedless peppers and specialty tomatoes increasing in Europe and U.S.”

The demand across Europe is increasing for the Breedx heat and cold tolerant sweet and seedless peppers and specialty tomatoes. Lior Carmeli, Breedx CEO says, "Our new varieties, specifically developed to be tolerant to both hot and cold conditions during fruit set, is key to help major growing and exporting countries to ensure continuity of supply all year round. Especially as the weather becomes more unpredictable the world over."

He says Breedx not only focus on varietal innovation, but they seek new approaches in their business to change and make a bigger impact to the benefit of the rest of the value chain too. "From the outset, the main focus was to develop specialty vegetables with consumer benefits. We implement a new approach to the breeder-grower/shipper-consumer relationship that is quicker, more profitable, and more accessible to all our business partners along the vegetable supply chain."

Breedx develops specialty vegetables with consumer benefits. "We focus our development on two crops: peppers and tomatoes. Pepperito, the Breedx brand name for sweet seedless peppers, continues to be a favorite healthy snack in Europe and North America," notes Carmeli.

Breedx varieties are grown in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico for North American markets, Spain for the EU market and Israel for the local market, says Carmeli. "Breedx latest developments, all grown from seeds, include intermediate resistance to PMMV (L4), Powdery Mildew and TSWV." This is significant as many growing areas around the world are struggling with these diseases.

He says the Pepperito portfolio has three colours, "Red, orange and yellow so that the growers can have the option to pack a nice multi-colour assortment. We also focus on tomatoes. BreedX is highly consumer-oriented, the company has taken the mantra of 'Taste Tomato' and, using classical plant breeding techniques, is well on the way to commercialize special varieties," states Carmeli.

He says their new varieties are being trialled worldwide, in Europe, North America, Japan, South Africa and in their home country of Israel. "Recently, Breedx has introduced both Intermediate Resistance (IR) to ToBRFV and the ability to fruit-set at high temperatures for the most advanced varieties in its breeding program, and will continue to work in this direction.
