As of 1 September 2024, French cucumber production is estimated at 175,600 tonnes for the 2024 campaign, marking a year-on-year increase of 3,800 tonnes (+2%). In August 2024, cucumber prices were 10% higher compared to August 2023 and 11% above the 2019-2023 average for the same month. These price hikes follow the trends observed in July, where prices rose by 11% year-on-year and 9% compared to the five-year average, according to Agreste's economic outlook.
Increased production in the centre-west
While national cucumber acreage for 2024 is projected to decrease by 2% year-on-year, to 1,027 hectares—largely due to a reduction in greenhouse area in the Pays de la Loire region—it remains slightly above the 2019-2023 average (+1%). This modest growth is attributed to the recovery of areas in Languedoc-Roussillon, which were significantly smaller in the 2019 and 2020 campaigns. National production is expected to reach 175,600 tonnes in 2024, reflecting a 2% increase year-on-year, and staying close to the five-year average (-1%).
The year-on-year growth is most noticeable in the Centre-West basin, where glasshouse yields have improved. Despite poor spring weather that delayed plant growth and increased pest and disease pressures, national production rebounded over the summer.
Market dynamics: Peak production before mid-August
In June, the market showed some buoyancy, with lower production levels limiting supply to meet demand. By July, supply had steadily increased, and prices remained strong. In August, production peaked mid-month before declining, particularly in Languedoc-Roussillon. Overall, the market has remained resilient.
From January to July 2024, exports (7,200 tonnes) fell by 2%, while imports (41,900 tonnes) rose by 2% compared to the same period in the previous marketing year. As a result, the cucumber trade deficit increased by 3% year-on-year in volume terms.
