In just eight months, Peru has surpassed the avocado export figures for the whole of 2023, with 539,313 tons shipped and revenues of almost $1.13 billion. This performance surpasses last year's shipments, which reached 595,625 tons and $958,914,000 in revenues. Furthermore, the export value of Peruvian avocado in 2024 is the highest on record, surpassing the $1,061,988,266 of 2021.
ADEX Data Trade information, processed by the Service for Comprehensive Rural Development (Sedir), shows that the country's avocado production and export have experienced sustained growth in the last five years. "Avocado is a key product for our country's economy and especially for small producers and their families. The price per kilo at the farm has been favorable for everyone," stated Juan Cerna Espinoza, managing director of Sedir.
The leading avocado exporting regions are Lima (30%), La Libertad (26%), Ica (22%), Lambayeque (10%), and Ancash (5%). The Hass variety accounts for 93% of exports, while the rest includes varieties such as Fuerte, Zutano, Nabal, and Maluma. Peru has more than 60,000 hectares dedicated to avocado cultivation, almost half of which are in the hands of small producers.
Peru is the second largest avocado exporter in the world, after Mexico, and its main buyers are the Netherlands, Spain, Chile, China, the United Kingdom, Russia, and South Korea.
