Dr Afua Asabea Asare, CEO of the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA), highlighted the Authority's initiative to distribute high-yielding vegetable seedlings to farmers, aiming to enhance Ghana's vegetable exports. In 2023, vegetable exports contributed $15,050,000 to the nation's earnings, with plans underway to further increase exports. During a briefing in Accra, Dr Asare detailed collaborations with extension officers from the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to provide top-tier extension services to vegetable farmers, ensuring adherence to international standards.
Dr Asare also pointed out GEPA's role in diversifying Ghana's export portfolio beyond traditional commodities such as cocoa beans and timber. The Non-Traditional Exports (NTEs) sectors now encompass agribusiness, manufacturing, arts and crafts, and services. The NTE sector witnessed a notable growth in 2023, generating $3.944 billion, an 11.75% increase from the previous year. Key contributors to export earnings include iron and steel, cocoa paste, cashew nuts, and shea oil, with iron and steel leading at $447.8 million.
GEPA has launched several initiatives to bolster product development, market intelligence, and research, equipping exporters with essential tools and knowledge for global success. Among these initiatives is the "Youth in Export" programme, aimed at engaging the youth in export activities through practical training and mentorship. The programme has already facilitated the creation of over 500 jobs, with a third cohort expected to generate more than 4,000 direct employment opportunities.
Additionally, Dr Asare emphasized GEPA's commitment to supporting women in the export sector, with a focus on women-centered projects to empower female entrepreneurs and enhance their global market presence. These efforts are part of GEPA's broader strategy to ensure inclusive development and economic growth, benefiting all societal sectors. Plans are in place to expand these programmes, increase female beneficiaries, and establish new partnerships to provide more resources and opportunities for women in the export industry.
