Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, director of the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO), has shared insights on the performance of Thai mangosteen exports. Thailand, maintaining its status as the top global exporter of mangosteen, has seen its exports surge to 248,612.25 tons in 2023, marking a 20.8% increase from the previous year. This export volume translated into a value of US$502.24 million, up by 25.6% year-over-year. Notably, over 90% of these exports were directed towards China, underscoring the significant market share it holds for Thailand's mangosteen industry.
The primary export destinations in 2023 included China, with a commanding 93.73% share and a 27.4% growth in export value, followed by Vietnam, Hong Kong, South Korea, and the United States. These markets showcased varying growth rates, with the US experiencing a notable 176.8% increase in export value. The first eight months of 2024 continued this upward trend, with 247,274.83 tons of mangosteen exported, a 25.6% increase from the same period in the previous year, and an export value growth of 2.0% reaching $427.28 million.
China's imports of mangosteen in 2023 amounted to $730.41 million, a 16.2% increase from the previous year, with Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia as its top three sources. Despite Thailand's dominant position, the slight decrease in its market share alongside Indonesia's increase highlights the need for Thailand to diversify its export markets and enhance its production standards. Poonpong emphasized the importance of improving post-harvest management, extending product shelf life, expanding sales channels, and innovating to maintain competitiveness in the global market.
