Abbottabad and other regions have experienced disruptions in daily activities due to ongoing protests by the PTI over the last three days. These disturbances have led to the suspension of critical supply chains, affecting the availability and prices of essential goods in the Hazara division. The situation has particularly impacted the poor and middle-class citizens, with a notable increase in the cost of fruits and vegetables.
Transportation blockages and delays have significantly slowed down the supply of produce to cities, resulting in a marked price increase in the markets of the Hazara division. Fruits such as grapes, apples, bananas, and other seasonal varieties have seen price hikes of up to Rs100 per kilogram or per dozen. This sudden surge in prices has placed a financial strain on consumers who were purchasing these items at regular prices just a few days prior.
Vendors attribute the rise in vegetable and fruit prices to the disruption in supply chains. Commodities like tomatoes, onions, potatoes, and other vegetables have become scarce, leading to inflated rates. Market vendors have expressed concerns that the continuation of protests will further exacerbate the situation, as the transportation of perishable goods remains at a standstill.
The limited availability of essential items has opened the door for profiteering, with some traders charging arbitrary prices. This exploitation of the supply chain disruption has led to rampant profiteering, affecting primarily the poor and middle-class segments of society.
