In Sunsari, a district in Nepal, Binod Mehata, a local banana farmer from Inaruwa-4, faced a setback due to the monsoon-induced flooding. Mehata, who had invested Rs 800,000 in cultivating bananas on two bighas of land, anticipated revenues up to Rs 1.2 million during the Chhath festival. However, the flooding severely damaged his plantation, particularly affecting the Madarasi (Chini Champa) banana variety, which he had sourced from Madras, India.
The Agriculture Research Centre in Inaruwa, led by Nilkamal Singh, reported that the flooding has affected banana cultivation over 50 hectares, with an estimated financial loss of Rs 5 million. The disaster has not only impacted Mehata's farm but also extended to banana crops in the Bhokraha, Harinagar, and Devangunj rural municipalities. As a result, farmers in the region are seeking compensation for their losses. The district's banana farming spans 510 hectares.
