Pharr International Bridge celebrates 30 years as keystone in US-Mexico produce trade

The Pharr International Bridge, a critical conduit for produce imports from Mexico, is celebrating its 30th anniversary of fostering trade between the two nations. The event is set for Thursday, from 10 a.m. CT to noon, at its location on 9900 S. Cage Blvd.

City officials, alongside stakeholders from the agricultural and trade sectors, including produce growers, importers, distributors, consumers, and dignitaries from Tamaulipas, Mexico, will commemorate the bridge's role in advancing trade, agriculture, and commerce. The bridge is instrumental in the importation of over 65% of the United States' fresh produce, facilitating over $6 billion in produce trade and $47 billion in overall annual trade.

According to Luis Bazan, Pharr International Bridge Director, the bridge sees over 200,000 shipments of fresh produce annually. It ranks as the third port for overall trade with Mexico and stands as the seventh-largest and fastest-growing land port of entry in the country.

Pharr Mayor Dr. Ambrosio Hernandez has emphasized the bridge's pivotal role in global food supply, stating, "We are the No. 1 port for produce. We know that we feed the world." The produce season's onset underscores the bridge's vital function in maintaining the continuous flow of fresh goods, benefiting millions globally.
