The extension of the waiver for import requirements concerning goods from the European Union, as well as other territories previously exempt, has been set until 31 January 2025. Following its departure from the European Union on 31 January 2020 and the subsequent end of the transition period on 31 December 2020, Great Britain has ceased to be within the EU's safety and security zone. In response, the UK government has adopted a phased approach to implementing border controls.
From 1 October 2021, export requirements have been mandated for all movements, with certain exemptions. Additionally, declarations are necessary for goods entering or exiting the UK from or to non-EU countries. Specific measures for goods moving from Great Britain to Northern Ireland have been effective since 1 January 2021, detailed in the Northern Ireland section of the government's guidance. Initially scheduled for implementation from 1 July 2022, the import requirements for goods from the EU and other previously exempt territories have now seen a postponement of their waiver until 31 January 2025.
