Fyffes announced on Tuesday it was permanently eliminating 61 jobs, in Choluteca due to a reduction in demand for its products at the international level. This measure will not only directly affect the dismissed employees, it will also have an impact on at least a thousand indirect jobs related to the company's activity.
A Fyffes spokesperson explained the decision responds to a combination of factors related to the market and the increase in operating costs, including electricity, transport, and inputs, which has increased the cost of melon production in Honduras. "This decision corresponds to market issues and a matter of costs. Our priority at this time is to ensure the sustainability of the business and keep afloat with employment for the 4,500 people that we still have," the company representative stated.
