This week, Ukrainian farmers have been able to increase wholesale prices for onions, as reported by EastFruit analysts. It's important to note that demand in this segment remains quite high. However, most farms have already completed their harvesting operations, which has led to a sharp decline in the supply of field-grown produce.
Currently, onion prices in Ukrainian farms range from 10-15 UAH/kg ($0.24-0.36/kg), depending on quality and the volume of vegetable lots offered. Present prices are, on average, 16% higher than at the end of last week. Meanwhile, the supply of high-quality onions in the market is quite limited, as many farms continue to refrain from selling this produce.
In the current season, Ukrainian farmers report a higher percentage of substandard produce in the onion segment due to adverse weather conditions during the summer. Consequently, several farms reported widespread bacterial diseases due to the increased humidity during harvest. At the same time, trading companies purchasing onions for storage face significant challenges in acquiring necessary batches of acceptable quality products.
It is worth noting that, at present, onion prices in Ukraine are already, on average, 33% higher than during the same period last year. Moreover, most large farms intend to further raise prices for quality products if current sales rates are maintained.
