Peruvian banana exports decreased in September

Peruvian fresh banana exports experienced a decrease for the second consecutive month in September, despite an increase in the average price. During this period, key markets such as the United States and the Netherlands experienced fluctuations in their import levels, negatively affecting results.

Peru exported 10,747 tons of fresh bananas for $8 million in September of this year, i.e. 10% less volume and 11% less value compared to the same month of the previous year. In this context, the average price of this product increased by 9%, from $ 391 per kilogram in 2023 to $4.26 in 2024.

Despite a 3% decrease in volume and a 5% drop in value, the Netherlands continued to be the main destination with 3,571 tons and $2.7 million. The price in this market experienced a 1% contraction, standing at $0.76 per kilogram, but its share of all banana exports increased slightly from 32% in 2023 to 34% in 2024.

The United States was the second-largest importer of fresh Peruvian bananas with 2,604 tons (+68%), $1.8 million (+73%), and an average price of $0.69 per kilogram (+3%). The United States' share almost doubled, from 12% to 23%.

Italy, on the other hand, experienced a slight reduction in its imports of fresh Peruvian bananas, with a 12% drop in volume, reaching 1,094 tons. Despite a 4% increase in the price, which stood at $0.73 per kilogram, the value of exports to this country decreased by 8%, totaling $794,000. Italy's share remained stable at 10%.
