Joan Manuel Barrera, PromPerú consultant in Spain:

"We help Peruvian companies that want to export to Spain find the right buyers"

"Spain is a key market for Peruvian fresh products such as avocado, blueberries, grapes, and mangoes. Peru is Spain's second most important avocado supplier, only behind Mexico. Spain is a destination for many Peruvian fresh products, which reinforces the relevance of this market for Peruvian exports," stated Joan Manuel Barrera, economic and commercial advisor at PromPerú's commercial office in Spain.

PromPerú's main goal is to bring Peruvian companies closer to key international markets, and in particular, to strengthen trade relations with Spain and other European countries. PromPerú, an essential player in the internationalization of Peruvian products, is present in 29 countries and has six offices in Europe.

One of the most important services it provides is linking supply and demand. "PromPerú links supply and demand, which means that it helps Peruvian companies that want to export to Spain find the right buyers. This service is vital for many companies that would otherwise find it difficult to access international markets. In addition, it also supports Spanish companies interested in Peruvian products, providing them with lists of exporters and organizing visiting agendas to facilitate direct contact between the parties," Barrera stated. As an example, Barrera mentioned that a Spanish company interested in mangoes and avocados had recently traveled to Peru where, thanks to an agenda created by PromPerú, they had visited eight Peruvian companies processing plants.

Participating in international fairs is also key to PromPerú's strategy to promote exports. Barrera highlighted the importance of events such as the Fruit Attraction fair in Madrid, where Peruvian companies have the opportunity to meet with buyers from Spain and from all over Europe. "At a fair, you can find a lot of companies in one place," Barrera said, stressing that these events are an efficient and economical way to connect with international markets.

PromPerú, together with the Association of Agricultural Producers Guilds of Peru (AGAP), makes it easier for Peruvian companies to participate in these fairs, sharing the costs of renting space and building stands. The cost of participating in fairs varies by country and stand size, but it is always a profitable investment due to the exposure it provides, Barrera added.

Regarding the challenges, Barrera said that each company is different and faces particular challenges in terms of volumes and export projections. However, PromPerú continues to monitor the European market to provide strategic information to Peruvian exporters and help them overcome these challenges.
