Newer blackberry varieties dominate with consumers and growers

Newer and better blackberry varieties continue to flourish and for one grower-owned cooperative, these varieties are ushering in a new era. North Bay Produce says its Erandy® blackberry program will see a strong season this year. These large berries have a resistance to regression and a lack of seeds as well as an extended shelf life and a sweet balanced flavor–particularly consistently so during their peak season.

A closer look at the Erandy berries.

The cooperative's grower-friendly berries are grown in Mexico and are expected to be available from mid-November through mid-June. Along with the Erandy, North Bay is also offering Erendira®–a medium-to-large blackberry with high Brix, improved firmness, and less regression. With these two berries thriving, this means North Bay will be 100 percent Tupi-free for the 2024/2025 Mexican blackberry season.

The cooperative's grower-friendly berries are grown in Mexico and are expected to be available from mid-November through mid-June.

The role of genetics
While blackberries account for just one of the berries the cooperative supplies (along with blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries) this berry comes with great expectations. "The blackberry category represents a huge opportunity for the industry, and proprietary genetics like the Erandy are the key to unlocking that opportunity, through providing a consistent, delicious eating experience for consumers," said Sarah Quackenbush, sales manager at North Bay. "We have found through all our proprietary genetics across the berry category that a consistent eating experience builds consumer trust and creates incremental growth in the category."

Blackberries and more can be found this week at North Bay's booth, #4039, at the IFPA Global Produce and Floral Show in Atlanta.
