North Sea Port CEO Daan Schalck resigns, search for new leader begins

North Sea Port, the amalgamation of Vlissingen, Terneuzen, and Ghent ports, has initiated the process to appoint a new CEO following Daan Schalck's decision to resign at the year's end for personal reasons. Schalck, who has been at the helm since 2018 and previously served as the director general of Ghent Port Company from 2009, is credited with leading significant developments within the port authority, including the strategic merger and the completion of the New Lock in Terneuzen.

Pieter van Geel, chairman of the Supervisory Body, expressed gratitude towards Schalck for his contributions, highlighting his role in navigating the port through challenges such as Brexit, the energy crisis, and the impacts of the war in Ukraine. Schalck remarked on his departure, noting the successful completion of major projects under his leadership and stating that it was time to prioritize different aspects of his life.

During the transition, Schalck will collaborate closely with the directors, ensuring a smooth handover of responsibilities. The port authority has assured that operations will continue as usual, with a portion of Schalck's duties already distributed among other directors. The search for a successor is set to commence shortly.

Despite the leadership change, North Sea Port remains focused on its strategic objectives outlined in 'Connect 2025', aiming to enhance its status as a leading European port. The port authority is committed to economic growth, sustainability, and fostering a circular economy. The forthcoming CEO will play a crucial role in realizing these goals and maintaining the port's pivotal position in facilitating trade and connectivity between Flanders and the Netherlands.
