Part of agricultural Italy is grappling with drought. Many farmers are facing a water emergency that has worsened especially in recent years and not only in the summer months, causing increasing damage to production. In the regions of central and southern Italy, the lack of water is still being felt, even though autumn has arrived. Companies are searching for wells from which to draw irrigation water.
Vincenzo Orso, a drone pilot boasting 35 years of experience as a helicopter pilot and the owner of Hydro Hunter Italia - a company that searches for water underground - comments that "we are definitely experiencing greater demand than a year ago, when the autumn weather was quite mild. This time, however, summer has been torrid, and the rainfall shortages have been going on for too long. People are calling us mainly from Sicily, Basilicata, Puglia, Abruzzo, Calabria and Umbria, telling us that they are still finding it extremely difficult to irrigate their crops and are therefore willing to drill the ground and create Artesian wells."

In order to find water underground, Hydro Hunter Italia uses innovative remotely-piloted, fixed-wing, multi-rotor aircraft systems. "In about 20 minutes, we are able to fly over and scan the subsurface of a large area of land, identifying the presence or absence of water up to 250 meters deep, through the use of electromagnetic waves. In just a few hours, we are therefore able to tell farmers whether groundwater for irrigation purposes is present in a specific area and whether it is worth contacting drilling companies. However, the companies' budget available for this type of operation is increasingly smaller, so it is often not possible to fully cover the areas concerned and potentially suitable for finding water resources. People should understand the importance of our work better."
