Gilfresh partners with Asda to supply 50,000 pumpkins in Northern Ireland

Gilfresh Produce, based in County Armagh, has established a partnership with Asda, supplying over 50,000 pumpkins to its 16 stores across Northern Ireland. The Gilpin Family, founders of Gilfresh Produce, initiated the company in 1965, with Thomas Gilpin beginning his venture into vegetable growing. The company has since grown, with William Gilpin taking the role of Managing Director in 1999.

As a prominent vegetable supplier in Northern Ireland, Gilfresh has been working with Asda since 2008. This collaboration has evolved over the years, with the initial order of 15,000 pumpkins in 2019 expanding to over 50,000 units, cultivated across 20 acres of land. The region's favorable climate and agricultural conditions in County Armagh, known for its orchard county characteristics and efficient pollinator activity, support the growth of both medium and large pumpkins.

Richard Gilpin, Head of Farm Operations at Gilfresh Produce, emphasized the significance of their relationship with Asda, highlighting the annual increase in demand for pumpkins. Cathy Elliot, NI Local Buying Manager at Asda, also recognized the importance of sourcing locally grown pumpkins from Gilfresh, noting the proximity of the produce to their pack house, which aids in reducing transportation distances and supports the local farming community.
