New avocado program launches in Canada

Avocado supplies from Mexico to Canada are steady right now. City Wide Produce Ltd. based in Surrey, British Columbia just began shipping avocados this month. "This is a brand new item for us," says Kirk Coolen of City Wide Produce. "There is very good demand for them."

The avocado shipments are coming from Jalisco, Mexico, and the company will now be shipping the fruit year-round.

Why add avocados?
The addition of avocados for the shipper is part of a bigger picture forming for City Wide. "We are a growing company and we are looking to add more commodities to our offerings," says Coolen, adding that it's aiming to target shipping the fruit to both retail and foodservice clients. "Avocados are such a popular item that we decided to import them and we are really looking to grow this program."

As for sizing, right now it is carrying sizes 48, 60, and 70 avocados and Coolen says on demand, it is steady for avocados. "The new crop for avocados is also around the corner and we are looking forward to that," he says, adding that the avocados it currently is shipping are from the Flora Loca crop.
