Peru ascends as a global agricultural powerhouse, leading in blueberry exports

Peru has established itself as a formidable player in the global agricultural market, particularly in the export of blueberries and quinoa, where it leads internationally. It also ranks second in the export of fresh avocado, Amazonian chestnut, and ginger, and third in preserved palm hearts. Notably, projections for 2023 position Peru as the eighth largest fruit exporter globally, with sales anticipated to surpass US$5.681 billion.

Elizabeth Galdo, head of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), highlighted at the 22nd Agro-export Luncheon of the Association of Exporters (ADEX) that blueberries, avocados, and grapes are among the most competitive Peruvian fruits on the world stage. Furthermore, Peru is the third largest fruit exporter in Latin America, trailing only behind Mexico and Chile.

The agricultural sector's export growth, which saw a 13% increase in the first two months of this year, is attributed to a 7.3% rise in fruit exports. In 2023, blueberries and grapes were the top exported fruits, bringing in revenues of US$1.705 million and US$1.777 million, respectively, and reaching 141 markets, notably the United States and the European Union.

Minister Galdo emphasized the significant strides in agricultural exports in recent years. She outlined a strategy for enhancing Peru's global standing, involving collaboration with the National Agrarian Health Service of Peru (Senasa), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Commercial Offices of Peru in the World (OCEX) of PromPerĂș. This strategy includes leveraging technological innovations like the Single Window for Foreign Trade and engaging in international trade negotiations to improve market accessibility.
