Onion market strengthens with rising demand and prices

Chuck Hill, associated with The Onion House in Weslaco, TX, reported on October 23 that onions from Olathe, CO, are currently being shipped from storage, encompassing all three colors. He highlighted an improvement in the market, particularly noting the demand and quality for jumbo yellows and whites from Colorado's Western Slope and the forthcoming shipments from Corinne, UT, expected to commence with promising sizing and quality.

David DeBerry of Southwest Onion Growers, based in McAllen, TX, shared insights on October 23 regarding the Delta growers' storage onions, mentioning a decent mix of sizes, with yellows leaning towards larger sizes. This seasonal operation is anticipated to continue through the holiday period.

In the Idaho-E. Oregon region, Dwayne Fisher from Tamura Farms and Champion Produce observed a strengthening market across all sizes and colors as of October 23, with whites experiencing the most significant price jump. Fisher expressed confidence in the market's positive trajectory and noted the current transportation situation as manageable.

Steve Baker from Baker & Murakami Produce in Ontario, OR, noted an uptick in demand and a gradual increase in market prices, especially for whites, attributing potential future market growth to continued buying from Mexico. He also mentioned the current state of transportation as adequate for their needs.

Rick Greener of Greener Produce in Ketchum, ID, reported robust demand across several states and a positive outlook for exports, particularly to Mexico, Canada, and Taiwan. He highlighted the snug supply of whites and reds, suggesting a possibility for price increases, and mentioned the ongoing ease in freight availability.

Regarding crop updates, David DeBerry provided an update on Tampico, Mexico, and the Texas Rio Grande Valley, indicating that the Tampico district is fully planted and forecasting a late January start-up. He also touched upon the challenges in the Texas Valley related to irrigation issues stemming from the 1944 Water Treaty between the United States and Mexico.
