Negotiations are underway for Cambodia to commence durian exports to the Chinese market, as confirmed by Ngin Chhay, Director General of the General Department of Agriculture. The discussions have reached a stage where the necessary documentation for export has been submitted for review by the Chinese authorities. A positive outcome from this review will lead to the signing of export agreements and subsequent site inspections by Chinese delegations.
Chhay highlighted the importance of adhering to 'Good Agricultural Practices' (GAP) to meet the safety standards required for the Chinese market. Efforts are being made to train Cambodian farmers in GAP standards and to establish packaging facilities that comply with these safety measures. The successful export of durian to China is anticipated to elevate export prices and increase revenue for local growers.
With approximately 5,289 hectares dedicated to durian cultivation across nine provinces, Cambodia harvested 36,656 tonnes from 3,403 hectares. The expansion into the Chinese market represents a significant opportunity for the Cambodian durian industry.
