Innovative farming boosts harvest and income in China's Huidong County

In Huidong County, located in the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province, China, a significant advancement in agricultural practices was observed with a plantation owner, Luo Deyu, achieving a notable harvest of pomegranates in early October. In an innovative approach, Luo inter-planted various crops such as chili and pomegranate trees, covering an area of 60,000 mu. This method yielded exceptional results, particularly with the peppers, which demonstrated impressive size and quality, with yields surpassing 2,000 kg per mu.

Furthermore, the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, a prominent fruit producer, plays a crucial role in China's agricultural landscape. With over 20 million mu dedicated to fruit cultivation, Guangxi contributes significantly to the national output, particularly in persimmon, dragon fruit, and passion fruit. The region's production of mandarin oranges alone in 2023 amounted to approximately 18 million tons, representing a significant portion of global production.

The enhancement of cold-chain logistics and infrastructure development in China's western regions has facilitated the global distribution of its agricultural products, strengthening trade relations. Yunnan Province, in particular, has emerged as a key vegetable export center, focusing on ASEAN markets. The China-Laos Railway has been instrumental in expanding Yunnan's export capabilities, transporting a diverse range of produce to Southeast Asian markets, and significantly contributing to China's agricultural exports to the ASEAN.
